Products for the paper and packaging industry
The paper and packaging industries face a wide variety of challenges. They have to keep costs in check yet meet changing customer needs and rising quality standards. Sustainability and environmental compatibility are also becoming key issues in the manufacture of paper and packaging. Kuraray markets high-quality products for a variety of applications.
KURARAY POVAL™ (Mowiol) and KURARAY POVAL™ polyvinyl alcohols have been used in paper production for many years. They regulate the consistency of thickeners and are excellent carriers for optical brighteners – an important property given the trend to paper with enhanced whiteness. KURARAY POVAL™ (Mowiol) and KURARAY POVAL™ are also ideal for barrier layers on all types of release and barrier paper.
Speciality paper and bank notes
Polyvinyl alcohol greatly increases the mechanical properties of tissue paper and bank notes. Kuraray also supplies a range of specially modified polyvinyl alcohols: KURARAY POVAL™ R polymers have built-in silanol groups which enhance bonding with silica and therefore improve the printability of ink jet paper. KURARAY POVAL™ K polymers ensure good crosslinking of the resin blend in the topcoat on thermal paper.
Coatings with EXCEVAL™ ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers are particularly versatile thanks to their exceptional barrier properties and superior moisture resistance compared with polyvinyl alcohol. Our novel MOWIFLEX™ polymer compound is especially tailored to the demands of thermoplastic processing. As a water-soluble film, it is particularly suitable for packaging. Mowital® polyvinyl butyral can also be used as an auxiliary in coatings and a binder for multi-layer packaging products. EVAL® modified ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers offer outstanding barrier properties, combined with excellent processability. KURARISTER™ transparent barrier film has been developed specifically for retort pouches and for disposable PVC-free films for packaging, our HYBRAR™ elastomers are a real alternative.
PLANTIC™, a starch-based compostable barrier biopolymer helps reducing the environmental footprint of packaging products.
