Flame-resistant and environmentally friendly: OEKO-TEX certification for Kuraray's hook and loop tape

Kuraray's Magictape and Freemagic hook and loop fasteners are manufactured using an especially environmentally compatible process. And now they have been certified by OEKO-TEX.

Hattersheim: March 1, 2018 The Magictape and Freemagic polyester hook and loop fasteners made by Kuraray have been certified as conforming to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, showing that they do not contain harmful substances. This is one of the best-known consumer quality labels. The manufacturing process for Magictape and Freemagic is environment-friendly. Moreover, these fasteners are flame-resistant, so they especially suitable for use in the automotive sector and in planes. These safe polyester hook and loop tapes do not contain any harmful substances, making them suitable for use in apparel too.

Hook and loop fasteners are versatile, easy to use and almost indestructible, which is why they have been used for decades in vehicles, apparel, sports equipment and even the aviation and aerospace sectors. Magictape and Freemagic polyester hook and loop fasteners from global speciality chemicals company Kuraray, which is based in Tokyo, Japan and Hattersheim am Main Germany, is now certified as being compliant with OEKO-TEX Standard 100. The following products now have the OEKO-TEX label:

  • Magictape hook tape, product no.: A8693Y
  • Magictape loop tape, product no.: B9751Y
  • Freemagic, product no.: F9820Y

Even suitable for baby clothes
OEKO-TEX has been using stringent criteria to test materials for harmful substances for more than 25 years Kuraray's polyester hook and loop fasteners have been certified as conforming to OEKO-TEX Standard 100 Product Class 1, the most stringent certificate, so they are also suitable for use in textiles for infants and toddlers. They also meet the standards set by the United States Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), especially those applicable for children's products, and Annex XVII of the European Union's REACH Regulation on restricted substances such as azo dyes and nickel.

Environment-friendly production without back-coating agents
Starting in production, Kuraray focuses on environmental compatibility and ensuring that its products do not contain harmful substances Last year this specialty chemicals company switched its entire hook and loop fastener production to a new process that no longer uses back-coating agents. Kuraray's hook and loop fasteners are therefore an effective, safe and environmentally friendly solution.

Simple fastening with a single tape
While Magictape is a conventional hook and loop system comprising separate hook and loop tapes, Freemagic uses alternating hooks and loops in the same tape. This means that a single tape can be fastened to itself at any point. That makes it more user-friendly in apparel, e.g. for belts and cuffs. In addition, the soft structure reduces snagging of the fabric it tape is attached to. Both types of hook and loop fastener meet the automotive safety standard FMVSS 302, the US counterpart to ISO 3795.
They are flame-resistant and suitable for use in road vehicles and planes as well. They hold components or seat covers firmly in place and simplify replacement.
