PEI Fibre

Kuraray’s PEI fibres are highperformance thermoplastic fibres engineered for flameretardant applications, such as composite materials used in automotive and aircraft interiors.

Polyetherimide (PEI) fiber is a high-performance fiber derived from PEI resin, a well-known high-performance engineering thermoplastic. While PEI is commonly supplied in resin form, processing it into fiber is technically demanding due to its high melting temperature and material characteristics. We are among the few manufacturers worldwide capable of producing PEI fiber using advanced spinning technology.

PEI fiber retains the inherent flame retardancy, heat resistance, and low gas emission properties of the base polymer -critical requirements in automotive and aerospace applications where strict fire safety and air quality standards apply.

A primary application of PEI fiber is in thermoplastic composite prepregs for automotive and aircraft components. Unlike conventional thermoset systems, PEI-based composites enable thermoplastic processing, offering recyclability and shorter molding cycles. During consolidation, the PEI fiber softens and flows under heat and pressure, forming a uniform matrix that bonds reinforcing fibers.

In its fibrous form, PEI enables excellent homogeneity within nonwoven structures, ensuring consistent resin distribution and effective impregnation. This structural uniformity contributes to improved mechanical performance, durability, and lightweight design in the final composite parts.
