MOWITAL® – for strong binding capacity and a brilliant luster

From paints and inks to adhesives, ceramics, films and even 3D printing, polyvinyl butyral (PVB) resins are very important for many applications. Our MOWITAL® range of powders, granules and films offers the ideal product tailored to your specific needs.
The production of MOWITAL® starts with polyvinyl acetates of different molecular weights. These acetates are transesterified to polyvinyl alcohols (PVA). The aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution then reacts with butyric aldehyde in the presence of a small amount of mineral acid to form polyvinyl butyral. This polyvinyl butyral is then separated from the aqueous solution, washed and dried.

Luster and perfect rheological properties for paints and coatings

MOWITAL® has high binding capacity, making it an excellent binder for printing inks, paints and coatings. Thanks to their specific rheological properties, PVB products greatly improve the flow properties of formulations. In addition, MOWITAL® has outstanding optical transparency. The resins are crystal clear like glass – for brilliant paints and coatings.

Resistant materials for 3D printing, automotive applications and electronics

MOWITAL® products have very good adhesion to organic and inorganic substrates. Thanks to their excellent bonding and film-forming properties, these polyvinyl butyral resins are ideal for use in adhesives. After crosslinking, MOWITAL® gives structural adhesives very high chemical and mechanical resistance. These PVB products are also used in the manufacture of high-performance ceramics for electronics. When used as filaments in 3D printing, they also give high-quality results. Extruded MOWITAL® films can be used as substitutes for heat-curing resins in composites, for example, for automotive components.

You can benefit from this broad portfolio of products and quality that sets standards worldwide. Contact Kuraray – Europe's leading producer of technical PVB.
